Two of Barack Obama’s advisers have told the AP news agency that he will order an issue to close the controversial prisoner camp during his first week in office. This pledge comes just a day after Obama seemed to back track from his campaign promise of a speedy closure, saying that the termination of the camp is ‘complicated’.

What will happen with the more than 200 detainees who are still there? More than 700 was originally brought to the prison when President Bush ordered a sweep of countries as a part of his ‘war on terror’. Many have been released, but most of the remaining prisoners have been cleared for release, but must remain where they are as countries are reluctant to take them. This is probably the main concern for Obama; where to keep people who may or may not be terrorists, and who are not US citizens? What will happen to these people whilst their fates are being decided? Place them in another, more luxuries camp without the torture and the orange jump suits? Give them hot showers and two coloured drinks with umbrellas in them and hope it will make up for years taken from their lives? Barack Obama needs to handle this carefully, and he needs to get it right.
