The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has today arrived in the Middle East to do what no one has been able to do before him; crate peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis. Very few thinks he will succeed, and few thinks that peace is his only agenda.

Norwegian Middle East expert Hilde Henriksen Waage says ‘Sarkozy is in the Middle East to score some points and to strengthen France’s position in the area.’ She continues to say that as long as the EU is as divided as it is now, Sarkozy’s peace mission will not stand a chance.
This is not the first time the French president has tried to intervene; on 1st January he failed in getting the Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni to accept a temporary ceasefire.

Sarkozy’s first stop is Egypt where he will meet with President Mubarak before he moves on to the West Bank and Israel. There he will meet with the Israeli Prime Minister and the Palestinian President, but not with leaders of Hamas, who controls Gaza.And while the politicians agree to disagree, the causalities rise by the hour; parents are losing their children and children are becoming orphans. The people of Gaza are now running out of food, fuel and medicine supplies, and aid agencies are warning of a catastrophe unless something is done. Soon.
