Several MPs have called for an inquiry into the claims of Binyam Mohamed, who is adamant the MI5 fed information to the CIA when he was in custody, making the MI5 implicit in the torture he endured while in captivity. Mohamed was held in Afghanistan and Morocco before being transferred to Guantanamo Bay.

‘I met with British Intelligence in Pakistan. I had been open with them. Yet the very people who I had hoped would come to my rescue, I later realised, had allied themselves with my abusers.’ The allegations from Binyam Mohamed are shocking, because while we’re now used to the CIA not being the ‘good guys’ anymore, now we can’t even trust the MI5. The elusive and secretive agency is apparently not what we see in the James Bond movies, where torture is not condoned, but gentleman-club like manners are.

Was this maybe a ‘one-time thing’? Was Tony Blair so caught up in George W. Bush’s ‘war on terror’ that he gave him whatever Bush thought he needed to win this ‘war’? Is this how far Great Britain is prepared to go to maintain this special relationship we keep hearing about?

I have faith in Obama. That he will be a decent leader, who will not use torture, who doesn’t think that the end justify the means. I wish I could say the same for Brown, but so far I just see him as a failed puppet. If only I could identify the puppeteer.
