Binyamin Netanyahu was yesterday invited by the Israeli president to form a new government, making him the prime minister, once again. This is bad news for the ongoing peace process in the region, as Netanyahu is as set on creating peace between Israel and Palestine as Bush was on signing the Kyoto agreement. In his acceptance speech he did not once mention the stalled peace process or the idea of a two-state solution, but instead he used the opportunity to issue a stark warning to Iran over it’s nuclear advances.

With Binyamin Netanyahu at the helm, Israel is poised for it’s most right-wing government in decades. This is a huge blow to counties that have invested time in trying to create peace in the region, and to the US in particular. The new government will carry on the neo-con values of the Bush era, just as the United States swings back under Obama. Netanyahu will run into immediate conflict with the US president who has urged a speeding up of the peace process and has tried cool the previous hostile rhetoric with Iran.

Binyamin Netanyahu’s idea of peace is an ‘economical peace’ where Israel will keep security control of the West Bank, it’s borders and air space. Palestinians would be allowed to police their own cities, but Israel would mount air strikes on ‘militants deemed a threat’. Peace is not born out of the promise of violence, and with Netanyahu at the helm, the prospect of peace seems a long way off.
