George W. Bush has been speaking to the media, stunning a whole lot of people when saying ‘I hope they feel that this is a guy that came, didn’t sell his soul for politics, had to make some tough decisions, and did so in a principled way.’ Really? His approval ratings are lower than those of Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal, and his politics and decisions criticized by many, but he insists he will leave the office with his head held high.

He told ABC news that the biggest regret of his presidency was the failed intelligence on Iraq. It didn’t fail, it was flawed. Or even made up, so his decision to go to war had some backbone. He went on to say that as President you have to expect the unexpected, and Bush used these as examples of the unexpected. As a Bush critic I will point out that none of neither one of these were totally unexpected. His own intelligence agency had information that an attack on US soil was imminent, and he weather forecasters did say that there was a hurricane on the way. It was his way of responding to these catastrophes that was unexpected. And wouldn’t you think he could prepare for that?

‘I made tough calls’ he said. Not nearly tough enough.
